Impromptu trip to Amana

At church on Sunday, fellow MORE members, Mark and Narcissa, asked us if we were up for a ride to the Amana Colonies in Iowa, for supper. Since the weather was beautiful, we jumped at the chance! MORE members Kim and Sue were also happy to accept the invitation!

We all met at Kim's house for our trek to the Colonies. Kim had a route all mapped out! We headed west on route 6 which took us through Iowa City, Iowa. We made a stop at Hawkeye Harley to browse around and stretch our legs. That's one of the few Harley dealerships that I've seen open on a Sunday. Cool!

Continuing north out of Iowa City, we ended up at the Amana Colonies in the 4:00 range. I hadn't been to Amana since I took a group of student there on a field trip 15 years ago. We had dinner at the Ox Yoke Inn. Wow, was it great! We had all the Roast Beef, Chicken, Ham, and side dishes that we could handle. The waitress kept bring food out as the dishes became empty. The meal was served family style. As our MORE group has become kind of a "family", it was certainly appropriate! Of course, I had a little room left for a piece of rhubarb pie!

Following the meal we all waddled out to our bikes. We thought that we might walk around the town a little bit, but most of the stores had closed up for the day. Bummer! We'll have to do some better planning in the future and leave time for some shopping. The area has a lot of little gift shops that looked interesting. Kim really wanted to visit the Amana furniture store, so he was disappointed to find it closed.

On the way back I had a little mechanical trouble on my bike. We got stuck in some stop and go traffic in Iowa City, so the engine got a little hot. That caused the main circuit breaker to trip and shut all of the electrical down on the bike. Fortunately, I was able to pull over to the side of the road and restart the bike. This happened a couple of times. Once we got on to the open road, the wind cooled the engine down and we made it the last 30 miles without incident. Obviously, I'll be taking the bike in to get it serviced.

Mechanical trouble aside, the afternoon was a blast! The ride was great. The fellowship was enjoyable. AND the food was amazing! In fact, the weekend was the best! Between the Saturday trip to Galena, and the Sunday trip to Amana, I couldn't have asked for any more!

Birthday Ride to Galena

Today is my birthday! If I was going to plan out the perfect birthday, it would have to involve, good friends, riding my motorcycle, eating Mexican food, shopping at a HD store, and eating Whitey's ice cream.

Well, that pretty much sums up my day today! We met some of our fellow MORE members at Panera Bread at 7:30 in the morning, for our trip to Galena. Unfortunately, I think the threatening weather scared away a few folks! We had hopes of having a lot of bikes heading out on this trip. Regardless, we had 5 bikes begin the journey in the fog and chilly air.

The plan was to head up route 92, north on 78 and then west on Stagecoach Road, arriving at Galena in time for lunch. With our trusty leader and GPS guy, Terry, in the front of the pack, we embarked on our trek northward. Jan and I brought up the rear. There were times that we could barely see Terry's tail lights just a few yards in front of us. Though it wasn't actually raining, the fog was thick with moisture. Our friends Craig and Connie joined us for this trip. Craig told me later that his pants were soaked! He says he's going to look for a touring bike to ensure a little weather protection!

After and hour or so, the fog lifted and the sun actually tried to poke its head out every once in a while. If you dressed properly, the temperatures weren't too bad. I had my overpants and my jacket on. Other's in our group were wearing full leathers. So, we were well prepared for any type of weather.

Route 78 and Stage Coach Road is a great way to get to Galena. We usually take Route 84 (Great River Road) but, we've done that ride so much it's getting a little boring. So, this was a welcome change. By the time we got to Galena, we were all starving. There were a lot of events going on in town. Our plans were to eat at Vinni Vinnuchi's, but the crowds pretty much put a halt to that idea. So we ate at a Mexican restaurant on the outskirts of town. Good eats! What made it even more special was that it was right next door to the Galena, Harley Davidson dealership! How convenient!

After lunch, we were all stuffed. We managed to find a couple of parking spots downtown and spent a couple of hours shopping. Jan found a nice half helmet that fit nice and looked great! We just bought some new headsets for the CB and intercom that are supposed to be used with a half helmet or no helmet. So this really fit the bill!

The ride home was great. The roads going out of Galena are great! We took Scenic Ridge Road to Savannah and the 84 home. Terry managed to find a couple of detours that were interesting too!

To cap off a perfect day, we stopped at Whitey's Ice Cream Parlor in East Moline for some dessert! You can't ask for a better way to top of a great ride!

Cruise in for Christ Pictures

Hi everyone! I wasn't able to recover the pictures that I took a the Edgewood, Cruise-in for Christ. Bummer! I did get some pictures however from Shane Davis, the event organizer.

In the first picture you see my back (sorry!) Terry, and my wife taking at look at our Ultra Classic. We just got the t-shirts we're wearing. They say "Riding for the King" on the front along with "Edgewood Baptist Church, Rock Island, Illinois". We got the shirts so that when we ride in a group, others will know where we are from. You'd be surprised how many folks come up and talk to a group of motorcycle riders!

Terry got this trailer earlier this year. It's come in handy on a couple of our trips. He gets to haul all of the junk that we by when we go shopping at some tourist trap! LOL!

This black SS Chevelle was the "Pastor's Choice" at the Cruise-in. Pastor Brown is a car guy, so he had a blast judging the over 80 vehicles that arrived at the event.

Cruise-in for Christ

Our church held a "Cruise-in for Christ" today from 2:00-6:00. The event was a huge success. Shane Davis, the event organizer, had hope to have 50 vehicles at the show, but at last count near 80 cars, trucks and motorcycles were on display. Hundreds of people were in attendance to view all of the shiny vehicles!

Looking at the cars, was not the only activity this afternoon. There was also a "moon walk" for the kids, outlaw races (pine wood derby cars), 50's and 60's music, and food supplied by Hy-Vee.

Jan and I arrived at the church @ 2:30. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I wasn't prepared for the huge number of cars and people. We parked our Harley Davidson Ultra Classic next to the Bullock's Honda Goldwing. Luckily Terry was pulling his trailer and had loaded up some chairs for us to sit in. I had no desire to bungee-cord lawn chairs to my bike! Later in the afternoon, fellow MORE members Mark and Narcissa pulled up on their 2010 Ultra Classic. We all had cleaned up our bikes so that they were nice and shiny. Several folks stopped by to take a look!

After the show, we decided to take a ride. We went west in to Iowa and tooled around Scott County Park. It was a wonderful evening for a ride. The sun was going down and we were all hungry though and decided to head back to the Quad Cities for dinner.

As usual, La Flama was our restaurant of choice. We had a wonderful meal and great fellowship. Not only do we all enjoy riding motorcycles, we also enjoy each other's company. It's so nice to have friends that have similar interests and values.

Unfortunately, on the way home after dinner, a driver decided to turn left from the right-hand lane right in front of me. Luckily, I was only going @ 25 mph. I slammed on the breaks and skidded to a halt without dropping the bike. I didn't get the clutch pulled in fast enough however, killing the bike. My heart was in my throat as I started the bike back up and merged back in to traffic. I really wish people would pay more attention when driving. That really could have been a nasty situation!

I took a few pictures of the car show, that I had intended to add to this blog. For some reason however, the pictures did not get save on my phone camera. Hmmmmmmmmmmm......If I find them,I'll be sure to share.

Upcoming MORE events

Hi everyone!

Just thought I would write you all a quick note regarding some of our upcoming MORE events. The riding season is getting shorter but, we still have a few things on the schedule.

First up is the Edgewood, first annual "Classic Car Cruise-in" on Saturday, 9/19. I know, you're probably thinking what does a car show have to do with motorcycles. Well, Shane Davis, the event organizer thought it would be neat to have a the MORE group display a few of our motorcycles. Car guys love anything that is shiny and has a motor! The event lasts from 2-6 in the afternoon. Come when you want and stay as long as you wish! This should give us the opportunity to advertise our riding group to the community. Perhaps we can go out to dinner after the show!

Our next ride is planned for Saturday, 9/26. Our destination will be Galena for a day of shopping and lunch at Vinni Vinnuchi's. We'll leave at from our usual meeting place, the Burger King Parking lot, next to Panera Bread on John Deere Expressway. The meeting time will be 8:0) in the morning. Let's try to get a big group going this time!

Finally, we also have a day trip to the Spoon River Tour on Saturday, 10/3. If you've never taken the Spoon River Tour, you're in for a treat. The towns in the Spoon River area of Illinois, set up all kids of craft fairs, bake sales, flea markets, etc. These historical towns roll out the red carpet for the thousand of visitors that attend each year. I hope the weather will hold out for us as that is a beautiful area of the State to ride. The leaves may be changing color as well!

I know that's three weekends in a row, but the riding season is coming to a fast close so saddle time is precious! I hope everyone can make some or all of these events!

Remember, MORE is a ministry that wishes to reach out to any motorcycle enthusiast. You don't have to be a member of Edgewood to join the group. You do however, have to enjoy the wind in your hair, good clean fun, and the fellowship of fellow riders.

Hogfest

Sometimes, the best rides are impromptu! On Labor Day, I knew that I wanted to go for a ride, but hadn't any definite plans. I got a phone call from fellow MORE member, Dennis, and settled on a ride to Kewannee to check out their annual Hogfest. Rumor had it that you could get a great pork chop sandwich!

As luck would have it, another MORE member, Mark, contacted me looking for a ride. So, I invited him to join us for our trip to Kewannee. We all met at Dennis' house for our journey.

The day was excellent for a ride! Upon arrival in Kewannee we immediately headed for the pork chop tent! It wasn't hard to find as the billows of smoke from the grill gave it away. I was extremely hungry and gobble down two sandwiches in no time flat! Fortunately, that left me with no appetite for the other delicacies that are usually found at a carnival. The funnel cakes looked really tasty but I didn't have any room!

After lunch in Kewannee, we headed north on route 78 to route 30. We ended up at a Tastee Freeze in Thompson for our dessert. Yum!!

Route 84, the Great River Road, was our highway back to the Quad Cities. We hadn't pre-planned any of the day's routes or activities. Sometimes, that's the best way to go!

Mike

Burlington for Breakfast

A couple of my friends from MORE and I decided to take a quick trip to Burlington, Iowa for breakfast. After the last couple days of solid rain (11 inches in two days), we were keeping our fingers crossed that the weather would hold up for us! Luckily, the day was a beauty! Temps were a little more like October than August, but with a jacket and warm pair of gloves, it was just fine.

So Kim, Nathan, and I headed out at 7:30 for our Saturday morning jaunt! The weather was little too chilly for our wives, so this turned out to be a man trip. Kim was in the lead, so I can't tell you what roads we went on. I was happy to follow him like he was the Pied Piper of Hamlin! There wasn't much traffic on the roads, so we were able to set the cruise (A nice feature I'm finding out) on 60 miles per hour, sit back and enjoy the cornfields flying by.
t
Speaking of flying, about 10 miles from Burlington, we came up over a small hill to find a bald eagle in the middle of the road. When the eagle saw us coming he gracefully took off, right over our heads. I'm glad the road was straight, because I couldn't help but gawk at this beautiful creature. They are so majestic looking in flight. I don't think I have been that close to one in the wild. Awesome!

We arrived in Burlington in about an hour and twenty minutes. Not bad! We had a great breakfast at the local Perkins and then headed for the Burlington Harley Davidson dealer. It's only about two blocks from the restaurant. I absolutely love looking at all the HD shirts and accessories. I saw a great looking shirt that I liked, but they didn't have it in my size. Bummer! But I did find some chrome, speaker covers for the fairing on my Ultra Classic. As soon as I got home, I installed them and they look great! I can't afford to purchase all of the chrome pieces I want at one time, so I'll have to buys stuff a little bit at a time. I think my next purchase is going to be some chrome speaker trim for the passenger seat. That will add a little shine to the back of the bike.

Kim and I had a tee time at 1:30 so we didn't have much time to stay in Burlington. We took off and made it back in to the Quad Cities @ 11:30. Plenty of time to change, grab a quick lunch and head to the course.

After soundly beating Kim in a friendly round, my wife and I took an early evening ride to one of our favorite restaurants. It's On the River, is a local hot spot for boaters and bikers. The food is fantastic and the view is amazing. Tonight we watched the sunset over the Mississippi and the town of LeClaire, Iowa. The river, the town on the banks, the hills in the distance, and the gorgeous sunset, painted a perfect picture for the perfect day!

Love the new HD

Well, I've had the new Harley about a week now. I absolutely love it!

Last week 3 other couples joined Jan and I for a trek to Waukeshau, Wisconsin to pick up my new (to me) 2002 Harley Davidson, Ultra Classic Electra Glide, Peace Officer Special Edition. Wow! That's a mouthful!

In the last couple of weeks we've been on bike trips to Wisconsin twice. Both times, as soon as we have hit the Wisconsin border, the skies open up and we get to test our rain gear! Sheesh! For about 35 miles on route 43, we were caught in a torrential downpour. Not fun!

But, as we headed over the final hill toward the dealership, the clouds parted and the sun began to shine. Eerily, the rays of sun appeared to focus directly on the bike shop! Really, I'm not making this up! It was a little spooky! We pulled in to the parking lot and peeled of our soggy rain gear.

As we were disrobing, the salesman brought out the Ultra Classic. I guess I must have had a rather astonished look on my face, as Mark immediately got out his camera and took my picture. The bike was beautiful! The salesman left it idling and got off the bike. It had that perfect HD sound. Potato, potato, potato.............

Like a little kid in a candy store, I hopped on the bike and began poking all the knobs and buttons on the fairing and handle bars! I couldn't wait to take it on the road! Of course I had to show my driver's license and don my helmet before taking the bike out. But, once I did that, down the road I sped! The bike was amazing. I'm not used that kind of power! I don't know if the previous owner added them or if they were a part of the Peace Officer Edition accessory package, but the bike is equipped with several Screamin' Eagle parts. Since, I'm not a mechanic, I can't tell you exactly what the Screamin' Eagle parts do, but more horsepower is one of the effects!

Signing the papers and taking care of the legal business didn't take long. I had done the majority of the business end over the phone, the week prior. So, we were back on the road in no time at all. We had gone up with 3 Harley Ultras and 1 Yamaha Roadstar. On the way back to the QC, we were all Harleys! One Ultra Classic is good looking, but when you stand several side-by-side, they are amazing looking! Each time we pulled in to a gas station or stopped at a restaurant, I had to step back and take a long look at the bikes. Beautiful!!!

I wish I could show you some pictures, but in my excitement, I forgot to take any! Hopefully, Mark or one of the other guys snapped a few! We put on 465 miles that day and collected some great memories along the way!

Picking up the new bike!

If you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago, I would have told you that my next bike would be a Goldwing. I had it all planned out, right down to the color and accessories!

Having made the decision, I began the fun process of looking for the bike of my dreams. On a daily basis, I scoured a multitude of Internet websites, looking for my new ride. During that process I saw literally hundreds of bike from all around the country. About a week ago, I noticed a dealership in Wisconsin that had several Harley Davidson Ultra Classic, Electra Glides for sale. One caught my eye. For some reason, I found myself going back to it several times during the day. The bike was beautiful! Could THIS be the bike that I'm supposed to buy?

I showed it to Jan and she said that the Ultra Classic and the Goldwing both have comfortable passenger seats, so it really didn't matter to her. She thought that the Harley was a great looking bike too!

Just for kicks and giggles, I contacted the dealer in Wisconsin to see if we could make some kind of a deal. Long story short, we agreed upon a price and the deal was done! I am going to be a Harley rider!

After putting the bike on Facebook and sending pictures to several of my friends, I had all kinds of offers from people who said that they would go with me to Wisconsin to pick up the Ultra Classic. If everyone shows up who said they would, we could have quite a posse making the trip!

Who would have guessed that I would be a HOG!?!

Another ice cream run!

What a beautiful evening for a ride!

After supper, we contacted a couple from the MORE group to see if they wanted to go for a ride and some ice cream. Mark and Narcissa are always up for a ride!

After supper Jan and I hopped on the Roadstar and headed out to meet our friends. They live out by Sherrard, so we enjoyed quite a ride, just getting to their house! When we got there, Narcissa loaded us up with some veggies from her garden. Luckily, our saddlebags were empty!

I don't know the area very well, so Mark took the lead as we headed west toward Sherrard. It seemed like we headed west forever! We went through Reynolds and a ended up hooking up with Route 92 just west of Loud Thunder Forest Reserve. Turning back east, we cut through Loud Thunder on our way to Andalusia. Mark pulled over in the park to show us a great area to picnic. We thought that we should organize a ride and a picnic for the MORE group. It would be quite relaxing!

As we headed over a hill, we noticed an animal laying in the middle of the road. It appeared to be a dog, laying on its back twitching uncontrollably. We thought that it was a dog, who had been hit by a car and in horrible suffering! As Mark neared the dog, he honked his horn but the dog didn't stop twitching. Suddenly, when we were just a few feet from it, the dog popped up to its feet and barked at us. Obviously the dog had decided to itch his back on the pavement in the middle of the road! We were laughing so hard, we had to pull over after that!

Once we hit Andalusia, we stopped for ice cream at the "Shivers and Shakes". Great stuff! On our motorcycle adventures, we have found several new restaurants and ice cream parlors. That's one of my favorite parts of the motorcycle hobby. I've see more things and places that I wouldn't normally get to see. We've also met a ton of great people along the way.

Sunday evening rides may get to be a tradition! It's a great way to relax prior to going back to the grindstone on Monday. If you can do it with a couple of great friends, all the better! Thanks Mark and Narcissa for the great ride and fellowship!

MORE goes to the Harley Museum

A small but brave band of bikers from Edgewood went on an adventure to the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, Wisonsin on Friday, July 17th and 18th. Unfortunately, the weather on those two days set record for the coldest temperatures since the late 1800's!

The weather predictions were not good for Friday, but as we saddled up at 8:00 in the morning, we were encouraged with sunshine and decent temperatures. We followed route 84 up the river through the picturesque towns of Albany, Fulton, and Savannah. From there our fearless navigator, Terry, took us through some neat roads that curved and wound our way to Galena, Illinois.

In Galena we stretched our legs and ate a wonderful lunch a Vinnie Vinuchi's (I'm not sure that I spelled that right!). With our bodies rested and our bellies full, we continued our trek to Wisconsin. As we headed across the state line, we encountered our first rain drops. So, we pulled over and donned our rain gear. Since we were already bundled up for the cool temperatures, we all looked like stuffed bears! We got a good laugh from making fun of each others outfits.

Unfortunately, the rain continued for the rest of our trip that Friday. As planned, we stopped at a Best Western hotel in Janesville, Wisconsin. After a great meal at the Cracker Barrel, everybody headed for their rooms to rest up for journey to the Harley Museum on Saturday.

Saturday's weather was not a whole lot better than Friday. The skies were gray and the temps cool. The only saving grace was that there wasn't any rain! We thought we had around 68 miles to get to Milwaukee from Janesville but, a detour took us about 20 mile out of our way!

We finally arrived at the museum around 10:30. What a neat place. We really enjoyed looking at the bikes and memorabilia. Seeing the evolution of the Harley motorcycle was interesting. After taking a tour of the facility, we all enjoyed a meal at the museum restaurant.

At 1:00 we climbed back on the bike for the long trek home. We had to ride on a few interstates, but once we got to Rockford, we hopped on Illinois route 2. This follows the Rock River through the towns of Oregon and Dixon. At Oregon, we took a quick stop to look at the statue of Blackhawk that sits majestically on the bluff overlooking the banks. We all agreed that this road will have to be a must this fall. The view will be amazing when the leaves turn colors!

After Dixon, I think we were all getting a little tired! We stayed on the back roads for a while, but eventually hopped back on Interstate 88 to hightail it back home. Jan and I pulled in the driveway just after 6:00. We were extremely tired, but agreed that the weekend was a blast!

Gotta think of some place to go in August!

Recent rides

Well, it's Wednesday and the weather is absolutely horrible! It started raining at 8:00 this morning and didn't stop until late this afternoon. So, I've been cooped up inside all day and nothing else to do but write this blog! LOL!

Yesterday however, was another story. For most of the morning, the weather was beautiful with plenty of sunshine and weather in the 70's. I had some yard work planned, but I couldn't help but take a spin on the bike. Heck, I'm on vacation you know!

I really didn't have an itinerary or a route planned. I ended up doing a motorcycle dealership crawl. I love looking at bikes of all shapes and sizes. So, I hit Hawkeye Motorworks, Weibler's Harley Davidson, and Brenny's. I saw some great bikes!

Somehow I ended up on Indian Bluff Road behind the airport. As I was zipping down the road, I noticed that the Met Life Blimp, "Snoopy 2" was moored right next the road. So, I hit the breaks and road as close as I could to get a picture. The blimp is in town for the John Deere Classic, PGA golf tournament. It's not every day you get to see a blimp up close!

Later in the day I took a spin to Rock Falls to visit Workman Harley Davidson. I've driven by it a hundred times, but have never gone in. It's very nice! Of course, I had to buy another HD t-shirt. Can't afford a new bike so a t-shirt will have to do. On the way there and the way back I took all kinds of country roads. Since I didn't have a map or GPS, I was navigating by the seat of my pants! That can be a little scary, but I think that's part of the fun!

All in all, it was a great day of riding. It made up for the lousy weather we're having today!

Bike Night and Ice Cream...What a combo!

On Thursday, Jan and I met the Hartley's and the Brackney's for a quick ride to Ducky's in Andalusia, for their weekly bke night.

Ducky's has great food, so it's a nice place to meet other bikers to enjoy a meal and look at a variety of bikes. You can either eat a burger off the outside grill or go inside the restaurant to order off the menu. Ducky's has a large seating area inside and outside to enjoy your meal. So, despite the large crowd, there was no problem finding a place to eat.

While we were waiting for our meal we strolled up and down the rows of bikes. There are literally hundreds of bikes of every kind of make and model imaginable! The vast majority of the bikes are Harley Davidsons (Go figure!) but, several Goldwings, Ducatis, metrics, and custom bikes were present as well. It was fun looking at all of the bikes and picking out the make, model, and color of my next bike!

After supper we went to Country Style for a quick ice cream cone before heading home. Finishing our rides by going to an ice cream parlor is getting to be a tradition! I like that!

Lunch at Poopy's!

Despite the gray skies and cool temperatures, a few friends and I rode to Poopy's in Savanna, Illinois for lunch today. In the picture to the left, you'll find Craig and Connie Brackney, Mike Nitzel, and Bob Hartley, taking a break at a gas station in Princeton, Iowa. Notice everyones wearing a helmet! I have mine on too!
Actually, the weather wasn't all that bad, but the temps were more like October than July. Luckily, I dressed appropriately for the weather!

For those of you who have not had the pleasure of visiting Poopy's, it is a great place to have lunch or breakfast. The food is wonderful and the portions HUGE!!! I ordered a club sandwich and couldn't come close to finishing it. I think if Jan and I go together we'll have to split a meal. Poopy's is also has a bar, gift shop, and tattoo parlor. I've only been there during the lunch hour, and have found the staff and clientele to be very friendly. I've driven by the place on the weekends and noticed that the parking lot is FULL of bikes! Route 84 is a major motorcyle track on the weekends and Poopy's is a popular stop.

No, I didn't get a tattoo while I was there, but found browsing through the artwork interesting. I've been thinking about getting at tatto, but haven't got the nerve up yet. We also browsed the gift shop. They have lots of t-shirts and novelties. I would have liked to have gotten a t-shirt, but unfortunately the slogan for Poopy's contains a word that I don't think is appropriate. So, I passed on making a purchase.

On the way up to Savanna, my saddlebag lid flew open. I must not have gotten it latched properly. I didn't notice it, but Craig Brackney pointed it out to me as we were riding. We stopped in Fulton so I could "button down the hatches". Luckily, the only thing I lost out of the bag was my do-rag! Bummer!

The ride home was pleasant and relaxing. I arrive back at the old homestead shortly after 3:00. I had a great time, but boy am I pooped! LOL!

A great ride to Anamosa!

With all of the weather forecasters predicting severe thunderstorms, we had a smaller group that expected head out this morning, to Anamosa for the annual J&P Cycle Open House. The weather however, did not prove to be a problem at all! In fact, it was an absolutely beautiful day!

We had 6 bikes and 10 brave souls head up route 61 to Maquaketa and then to Anamosa on Route 64. We arrived at J&P Cycles @ 10:00 on the nose! All I can say about the Open House is "WOW!" There are literally thousand of bikes at this event. Literally rows and rows and rows of motorcycles. Every type of motorized bike or trike is represented. Not only did we see every make and model known to man, there were many customized bikes as well. If you've never had the opportunity to attend this event, walking up and down the rows of bikes is reason enough to make the trip.

I'm amazed at how organized the Open House is run. I don't know if all of the folks working this event were employees or just volunteers, but there were folks to help you around every corner.

Since the weather was predicted to get nasty later in the afternoon, we only stayed at J&P until noon. That gave us plenty of time to visit the vendor booths, do a little shopping (Jan and I picked up a couple of T-shirts. Just what we need! LOL!), and take advantage of the free meal.

On the way home, we followed Route 64 all the way to Savannah, Illinois. Crossing the metal bridge in to Savannah is quite the experience! The trek back to the Quad Cities went without a hitch. We even got to stop for some ice cream in Thompson. I think that's getting to be a tradition on our trek home!

Again, Jan and I had a blast. We really enjoy riding our bikes with our Christian friends. Our next trip will be an overnighter to the Harley Museum in Milwaukee, on July 17th and 18th. Details will be coming soon!

Anamosa trip around the corner!

Wow! The weather sure has been hot lately! Luckily, riding the bike cools things down a bit!

As I write this, the battery to my bike is on the charger. Dummy me, forgot to turn the ignition off this morning when I went in to Panera for my morning coffee and bagel. An hour an a half later the battery was as dead as a door nail! My mom happened to be at Panera too, so she took me home to get my car. I popped the battery out of the bike and took it home to charge it up. Sheesh what an idiot I am!

Assuming that my bike is charged up, MORE is going to be taking a trip to Anamosa this Saturday for the annual J&P Cycle Open House. We are leaving at 8:00 from the Burger King parking lot (Next to Panera in Moline). Gosh my bike may still be there!

Lunch at the Open House if free! Yippee! We'll ride up as a group, but if you want to leave early or stay late please feel free to do so. I plan on staying until I get my free meal of course! LOL! Let's hope that the weather is OK for the ride. It's not supposed to be as hot as it has been for the last couple of days. Rain is predicted for late in the afternoon so we should be safe. I'd bring some rain gear just in case though!

Remember, you don't have to be a member of Edgewood Baptist Church to attend any of the MORE rides. We welcome any and all riders so, invite your friends to join us on Saturday! The more the merrier!

Applebee's and a quick ride!

Some of the best rides are done on the spur of the moment!

Our friends and fellow MORE members, Mark and Narcissa, just purchased a Honda Goldwing. Since they just got it on Friday, they were anxious to get it on the road for a ride. Mark was like a little kid with a new toy on Christmas morning! I don't blame him! At Pastor Tim's Couples Class, Mark filled everyone in on the details of his recent purchase.

Since the weather was promising, my wife Jan, Terry and Jodi (also MORE members!), and Mark and Narsissa agree to meet at Applebee's in Moline for dinner and then go on a ride. I couldn't wait to see Mark's new bike!

Jan and I got to Applebee's first and were soon followed by Terry and Jodi. They ride a shiny new, white Goldwing with all the bells and whistles. The engine is so smooth on it that I can state right next to it and not hear it running. Jan tells me I'm deaf! A few minutes later, Mark pulled in to the parking lot with Narcissa perched on the passenger's seat. His bike was equally beautiful (and quiet!) Though, I like my Roadstar, the cruiser looked a little out of place between the two luxury touring bikes!

After a great dinner, we embarked on our ride. Terry has a GPS system on his bike, so he got the dubious honor of leading our little group. When Terry is in the lead you are sure to see parts of the country that you never knew existed! This trip did not prove to be any different! We went through the thriving metropolises of Andover, Osco, and Lynne Center. I've lived in this area all my life and have never been in any of these towns. If I would have blinked however, I would have missed them!

Eventually, we dropped the other couples off at their houses and Jan and I continued on home. It was such a nice night, that we decided to stop at Country Style for some ice cream. Perfect!

We forgot to take our camera, so I don't have any pictures to share with you this time, but will try to remember in the future. The evening was a blast! Good friends and perfect night for a ride, made for a wonderful evening!

Ride to Anamosa

On Saturday, June 27th, MORE will be taking its next ride! We are planning to go to J&P Cycles for their annual Open House. J&P is located in Anamosa, Iowa. Though I've never attended the event, I hear it is quite the spectacle! Last years open house had over 10,000 people in attendance!

If you go to the J&P website ( http://www.jpcycles.com/) you'll find several videos of past events. Check it out! There should be a lot of vendors and displays set up to visit. I even here you get a free lunch!

Anamosa is a little over an hour away from the Quad Cities. The Open House starts at 9:00. We plan to meet at the Burger King parking lot (next to Panera Bread) on John Deere Expressway in Moline at 8:00.

Once we get there you can stay as long as you would like. I plan on heading back right after lunch (Gotta get my free meal!)

Remember, you don't have to be a member of Edgewood Baptist Church to ride with the group. We welcome any and all riders who enjoy good fellowship in a Christian atmosphere! At our last ride we had 12 bikes and 20 riders! The group was about 50/50 Edgewood members and non-members. The more the merrier!

Welcome to the MORE blog

Last year I rediscovered my passion for motorcycles. I owned a bike back in my 20's, but kids, careers and a host of other excuses got in the way of me riding it. Call it a mid-life crises or checking off an item on my "bucket list", but when I turned 50 I got the urge to get a bike. So, after saving up a few dollars, taking the MSF class (highly recommended), and securing my licence, I purchased a 2002 Yamaha Roadstar 1600. I was back in the saddle again!

I don't remember exactly how the topic came up, but I soon found out that there were several folks in our Sunday School class at Edgewood Baptist Church who rode motorcycles. In fact, I discovered that throughout the church there were many avid riders.

This all happend in the fall of 2008. With the weather turning colder and the riding season coming to a close, we didn't get a chance to go on any rides. We did however, plan a trip to the International Motorcycle Show in February. A group of 12 motorcycle enthusiasts piled in to one of the church vans and off to Rosemont, Illinois we went. The conversation during the trip was wonderful! It became evident that the groups was going to form a nice bond. Fortunately several of us brought our calendars and we planned a few rides for the coming summer.

After the trip to the International Motorcycle Show, I was very excited about finding a group of Christian friends who were as enthusiastic about motorcycles as myself. Sometimes the motorcycle culture can be a little "rough around the edges". Though you can't shelter yourself from everything, it's nice to know that you have a group of friends available that share the same values as yourself.

With this in mind, the Motorcycle Owners and Riders of Edgewood (MORE) was born. The purpose of the group is twofold:

  • First and foremost, MORE is a ministry. We hope to seek to serve Jesus Christ in all that we say and do.

  • Secondly, we provide opportunities for Christian fellowship to anyone interested in the hobby of motorcycle riding. We welcome members of Edgewood and guests alike!

The purpose of this blog will be to update and inform all interested parties about the activities of MORE. I hope you check out these pages regularly! We welcome you to join us for one of our future rides.

Ride safe!
